So we don’t have a particular name for this design, but it’s pretty wild! I made this drum for myself as part of an acoustics project I had to do for my Physics class and I’ve received several compliments in it so far just because it is so unique and unlike and other custom made Cajon drum we have ever built.
To start, I began by applying a coat of Miniwax Natural wood stain. This color does not make the drum very dark, but brings out a lot of the natural grains and colors in the wood. Once that had dried completely, I applied a coat of black spray paint to the drum. While the spray paint was drying, I took a hand held wood planer and went over the drum in the bizarre checker board pattern.
Once I had completed this step, I let the paint and stain finish drying. Finally, once it was dry I applied one last coat of the Natural color wood stain over the entire drum!
